Senses:
(?–1365) Posthumous title 妙應光國慧海慈濟禪師. Chinese monk of the Hongzhi (J. Wanshi) Branch 宏智派 of the Caodong (J. Sōtō) school. Founder of the Tōryō Branch 東陵派, one of the twenty-four transmissions of Zen 禪宗二十四流 that reached Japan. Came to Japan in 1351 following an invitation by Musō Soseki 夢窓疎石. He resided first at Tenryūji, becoming its third abbot, then moved to Nanzenji 南禪寺 (23rd abbot), Kenchōji 建長寺 (32nd abbot), and Engakuji 圓覺寺 (26th abbot). Should not be confused with Gyokuin Eiyo 玉隱英璵 (1432–1524. ). Interesting example of a Caodong monk becoming abbot of several Rinzai monasteries.
