Basic Meaning: Exposition of the Ancient Teachings of the Brahmāʼs Net Sutra.

Senses:

  • The Beommanggyeong gojeokgi, by Daehyeon 大賢. 4 fasc., T 1815, HBJ 3.417–477. Also extant in 2 and 3 fascicle editions. Also known by the titles 梵網古迹記 and 梵網經古迹. Along with the exegeses by Zhiyi 智顗, Fazang 法藏, Uijeok 義寂, one of the major commentaries on the Brahmāʼs Net Sutra 梵網經—the main source for the articulation of the Mahāyāna precepts. This commentary is distinguished from the major works in three main ways: (1) It is the only commentary that treats the very difficult first fascicle of the text, which explains the forty stages (the rest of the commentaries only treat the second fascicle, on the precepts). (2) Being first and foremost a scholar of Yogâcāra, Daehyeon relies extensively on the Vinaya portions of the Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra and other Yogâcāra-related works. At the same time he draws extensively from prior commentarial works, other sutras, as well as secular literature. (3) While the Brahmāʼs Net Sutra is the definitive text for the ten grave and forty-eight minor precepts 十重戒/四十八輕戒, the sutra does not actually provide its own labels for each of the precepts, thus, the major commentators created their own labels. In the subsequent East Asian tradition, the section labels created by Daehyeon in this commentary are considered the most descriptive of the actual content of each precept, and thus become widely adopted. This commentary was prized throughout East Asia, and especially by the Vinaya school of Japan, where extensive subcommentaries were composed by such scholars as Eizon 叡尊, Jōsan 淸算, Shō'on 照遠, and Jōsen 定泉.
