Basic Meaning: profound functions

Senses:

  • Chan term. According to the Fo Guang Dictionary it means 玄機妙用 ( 'profound activities and excellent functions' ). According to the Zengaku Daijiten (Komazawa) the character refers to faculties 機根 while refers to functions. The enlightened Chan master utilizes various means in daily living which transcend language such as leaning on a staff, gesturing or shouting with a stick to teach people.
