Basic Meaning: profound functions
Senses:
Chan term. According to the Fo Guang Dictionary it means 玄機妙用 (
'profound activities and excellent functions'
). According to the Zengaku Daijiten (Komazawa) the character 機 refers to faculties 機根 while 用 refers to functions. The enlightened Chan master utilizes various means in daily living which transcend language such as leaning on a staff, gesturing or shouting with a stick to teach people. This was popularized by Huineng 慧能. Also rendered as 禪機, 禪用 and 大機大用.
