機關木人

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: a puppet

Senses:

  • A wooden man; a wooden automaton; a marionette (Skt. *yantra). Cf. 木人. 〔道行般若經 T 224.8.466c10〕 "dārumayī strī vā puruṣo vā yantrayuktaḥ ( 'a wooden, automatic man or woman that can be moved by pulling strings' [cf. AsP.tr.II 258 = AsP.tr. 181])" [Seishi Karashima; source(s): Lokakṣema-AP, Hirakawa, FGD, M-W]
  • A manʼs body. The literal meaning is a marionette, but it means oneʼs body, because the human body is only an aggregation of the four elements 四大, there being no underlying substance. Interpreted as 傀儡. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, JEBD, Yokoi, JEBD, Ina-Z, Nakamura]
  • Cf. Karashima (Lokakṣema Glossary): view / hide
