Senses:
A no longer extant Japanese Rinzai school 臨濟宗 nunnery 尼寺 that was located in Saga 嵯峨 and was one of the
'Kyoto five nunneries'
京都尼寺五山. It was founded by Chinese priest Yikong 義空 under the patronage of Empress Danrin 檀林皇后 (wife of Emperor Saga 嵯峨天皇) in the Jōwa 承和 era (834–848). It is said to have been the first Zen temple 禪刹 in Japan. The complex had eleven halls 院, in one of which Empress Danrin, herself, resided and practiced dhyāna-contemplation 禪觀.
