歡喜地

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: ground of joy

Senses:

  • The first of the ten bodhisattva grounds 十地. This first bhūmi corresponds to the attainment of the path of seeing 見道, while the remaining nine correspond to the path of cultivation 修道. This first stage is called the "ground of joy" because the bodhisattva rejoices at having beheld reality as it really is for the first time. Also written as 極喜地 (Skt. pramuditā, muditā, pramuditā bhūmiḥ). Also called the ground of forbearance 堪忍地. 〔攝大乘論T 1592.31.105a18〕 [Charles Muller, Billy Brewster; source(s): Ui, Nakamura, Hirakawa]
