Basic Meaning: removing evil and cultivating goodness
Senses:
A general characterization for the religious—and especially Buddhist—lifestyle. The removal of evil 止惡 is generally understood to be based upon the practice of the precepts 戒律, with the cultivation of goodness 修善 being associated with the practices of the eightfold path 八正道, the six perfections 六波羅蜜 and so forth. Also expressed as 斷惡修善.
