Basic Meaning: five stages of correct and partial realization
Senses:
Also written 偏正五位. A theory attributed to Dongshan Liangjie 洞山良价 regarding the realization of ultimate truth in five stages. (1) Ultimate reality does not transcend temporal phenomena 正中偏. (2) The differentiation of the phenomenal world is none other than the unity underlying the phenomenal world 偏中正. (3) Even in the state in which discriminative thinking is transcended, there exists the power to manifest the function of all phenomena 正中來. (4) Even in the phenomenal world of differentiation, there exists the power to reach ultimate unity 兼中至. (5) The state in which the preceding four conditions are perfectly blended with one another 兼中到.
