The title of Dōgenʼs Shōbōgenzō, which exists in a several different recensions, has been variously rendered into English as: “The Eye and Treasury of the True Dharma”; “Eye Storehouse of the True Dharma”; “Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma;” “Right-Dharma-Eye Treasury”; and “Treasury of the True Dharma-Eye.” In the view of Foulk, only the last of these translations is correct and unambiguous in its recognition that the adjective 'true'  正 modifies the nominal phrase 'dharma-eye'  法眼. This is clear from the fact that, in the story of the transmission to Mahākāśyapa that occurs in the Jingde Record (Jingde chuandeng lu 景德傳燈錄) and other traditional histories, the expression 'treasury of the true eye of the Dharma' is used interchangeably with 'pure eye of the Dharma'  淸淨法眼. The phrase 'eye of the Dharma' remains constant in both cases, which shows that the adjectives 'pure'  淸淨 and 'true'  正 modify the word 'eye'  眼, not the word 'dharma'  法.

Arranged into sections under various topic headings such as “One Bright Pearl” and “Being-Time” wherein the author addresses various Buddhist topics, largely in the context of Chinese Chan literature. Having been translated into Western languages several times, this work has become one of the most popular in the Western Zen movement.
