Basic Meaning: an invocation

Senses:

  • A dedication; a prefatory statement found in sūtras and śāstras, wherein the author expresses his reverence for and faith in the Buddha, or in the Three Treasures 三寶. Also 歸敬偈 and 歸敬文. Common short invocations are 歸命大智海毘盧遮那佛, 南無釋迦牟尼佛, 南無阿彌陀佛 and so forth. [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura]
