歸謬論證派

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Prâsaṅgika

Senses:

  • A modern East Asian rendering for 'Middle Way Consequence School' (Tib. dBu ma thal 'gyur pa'i lugs). Also known as Prâsaṅgika-madhyamaka. Also rendered into Chinese as 具緣中觀派 and 歸謬論證中觀派. As understood in Tibetan tradition, a later branch of Indian Madhyamaka 中觀派 (Tib. dBu ma), the name of which literally means 'making use of the consequences.' This school was developed based on the work of Buddhapâlita (佛護; Tib. Sangs rgyas bskyangs, c.470–540) and Candrakīrti (月稱, c. 650), who, in working out the argumentation of the concept of emptiness (śūnyatā), denied the validity of the use of logical propositions which ended up affirming any sort of positive position. The other competing school which took instead an approach of positive dialectic was called Svātantrika (Middle Way Autonomy School; Tib. dBu ma rang rgyud; Skt. Svātantrika-madhyamaka) 獨立論證派; Tib. Rang rgyud), being founded by Bhāviveka (Tib. Legs ldan 'byed, or sLob dpon Bha vya; ca. 500–560). Buddhapâlita championed the use of reductio ad absurdum (thal 'gyur; Skt. prasaṅga) argumentation. This school was not transmitted to East Asia. [John Powers]
