死句

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: dead phrase

Senses:

  • A Chan 禪宗 term that is taught in contradistinction to a 'living phrase'  活句. A statement or response, usually made in the course of Chan encounter dialogue, which although it may be correct technically, does not come forth from genuine and spontaneous personal actualization, and thus is not helpful in terms of either demonstrating oneʼs own realization or leading another to it. 〔看話決疑論 HBJ 4.733〕 .
