(1710–1792) Korean monk of the late Joseon dynasty. Also known as Oam 鰲巖. In 1731, Uimin entered the saṃgha at the age of 22 upon the death of his mother. He was tonsured by Gaksin 覺信 of Bogyeongsa 寶鏡寺, and in 1734 he received the Buddhist precepts from Suhaeng 守行, a Seon master who belonged to Hyujeongʼs 休靜 Dharma lineage. Uimin studied the Four Teachings Course (sagyo gwa 四教科) and the Great Teachings Course (daegyo gwa 大教科) under Suhaeng, but later went to Tongdosa 通道寺 where he spent most of his time studying the Buddhist scriptures. He also studied the Huayan jing 華嚴經 under Ssangun 雙運 of Unbuam 雲浮庵 in Palgongsan.
In 1740, he visited various teachers and asked for their guidance in studying the Huayan jing 華嚴經, the Record of the Lamp Transmission 傳燈錄, and Hyesimʼs 慧諶 Seonmun yeomsong jip 禪門拈頌集. The next year he returned to Bogyeongsa and became its primary lecturer. He was known more popularly at the time as
'the Patriarch of Yeongnam'
(Yeongnam jongjang 嶺南宗匠). He passed away in 1792 at the age of 83. His writings can be found in the Oam jip 鰲巖集 compiled by his disciple Hoegwan 誨寬. [Juhn Ahn]
