毘倶胝菩薩

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Bhṛkuṭī Bodhisattva

Senses:

  • A figure in the Court of the Lotus Division 蓮華部院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅; also rendered as 毘倶胝, 毘倶胝觀音, and 毘倶胝觀世音菩薩. His skin is white in color, and he sits on a red lotus. His first left hand holds a lotus, the second a kuṇḍa 軍持 (flask). His first right hand holds a mala, the second is in the wish-granting mudrā 與願印. He wears a karman robe 羯磨衣, but no kāṣāya 袈裟. Seed syllables: bhṛ, trā. Mudrā: fists together, forefingers crossed. Mantra: namaḥ samantabuddhānāṃ sarvabhayatrāsani hūṃ sphoṭaya svāhā. The word bhṛkuṭi means 'contraction of the brow.' It is from the contraction between the brows of Avalokitêśvara 觀音 that Bhṛkuṭī emerges. The Darijing shu 大日經疏 (T 1796; fasc. 5) states that his body is surrounded by a pure halo comprised of yellow, red and white colors. The yellow represents increase of benefit 增益, the red represents placation 降伏, and the white represents cessation of disasters 寂災.
