Senses:

  • Pāli Vipassin. The first of the seven buddhas of the past 七佛, mentioned in the Āgamas 阿含經 and Nikāyas. He is said to have taught Śākyamuni and Maitreya in a former incarnation. His life is described in detail in the Sutra of Vipaśyin Buddha 毘婆尸佛經. His name is also transliterated into Chinese as 弗沙, 底沙, 毘鉢尸, 微鉢尸, 尾鉢尸, 鞞婆尸, 毘婆沙, 維衞, 惟衛佛, 維衞佛, and 維衛佛, and is translated as 勝觀, 種種觀, and 種種見. 〔倶舍論 T 1559.29.249b29〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, Hirakawa]
