One of the Four-Quarter Kings 四天王. He lives in the fourth layer of Mt. Sumeru 須彌山, and protects people living in the northern part of the world from yakṣas 夜叉 and rākṣasas 羅刹. He also protects the preaching place of the Buddha and hears the Dharma. In Japan during the Kamakura period he was regarded as one of the seven gods of good fortune 七福神. Since he is always guarding the site of enlightenment in hearing the Dharma, he is called as 多聞天.
