Basic Meaning: Fenyang Shanzhao
Senses:
(947–1024) Teacher of Ciming Quyuan, and thus ancestor of all surviving Linji 臨濟 lineages, Fenyang was the first master to add verse commentaries to the old stories or gong'ans 公案. A student of the Caodong 曹洞 lineage before receiving the Linji transmission from his teacher Shoushan Xingnian 首山省念, Fenyang introduced the Caodong five ranks teaching into the Linji tradition.
