河神小婢

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: river god as slave

Senses:

  • A reference to the god of the Ganges river 恆河, who was insulted by the arhat Pilinda-vatsa 畢陵伽婆蹉, who talked to the god as if the god were a low caste person (śūdra). Pilinda-vatsa did this due to remaining karmic impressions 習氣 from being an upper-class Brahman, and thus had the habit of addressing others as if they were śūdras. He apparently also had poor eyesight. After talking to the river god (Varuṇa?) in this way, the god complained to the Buddha, and the Buddha made Pilinda repent. [Charles Muller]
