法執

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: attachment to (the reality of) dharmas

Senses:

  • Also expressed as 法我執. The belief that although the self is an illusory conglomerate of the five aggregates 五蘊, the compositional elements of existence are inherently real (Skt. dharma-grāha). This concept figures prominently in Yogâcāra doctrine, where it is taught that the practitioners of the two vehicles are capable of eliminating attachment to the notion of an inherent, enduring self (我執, 生執), but are not aware of their unconscious attachment to the reality of phenomena. The bodhisattvas, seeing dharmas to be empty of an enduring nature, eliminate this error. Also, in Yogâcāra, this attachment to phenomena is considered to be the basic problem that skews cognition of objects, and is specially designated as 'cognitive hindrance'  所知障. 〔瑜伽論 T 1579.30.383a6〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Nakamura, Hirakawa, JEBD, Yokoi]
  • Attachment to the teachings. To hold rigidly to the teachings of Buddhism. Same as 法縛. [Charles Muller]
  • Also see 我法二執. [Charles Muller]
