Basic Meaning: Falang / Beomnang
Senses:
Falang (507–581). A master of the Sanlun 三論宗 (Chinese Madhyamaka) school, in the lineage of Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什, the successor to Sengquan 僧詮 of Sheshan 攝山. Originally from the commandery of Pei in Xuzhou 徐州沛郡 (mod. Pei County in Jiangsu 江蘇沛縣), with the secular surname Zhou 周, he was tonsured at the age of 21. He first studied dhyāna with Baozhi 寶誌 before taking up his studies with Sengquan. In 558 he was called to the Chen capital by the emperor and installed in Xixinghuangsi 錫興皇寺, where he began lecturing on various texts. He was the author of the Zhonglun xuanyi 中論玄義 and the Si xitan yi 四悉檀義, neither of which seems now to be extant. Falang was the master who originally ordained Jizang 吉藏 at the age of seven (var. thirteen). Later Jizang criticized his thought. According to Whalen Lai, Falang was the first in this lineage to seek a serious rapprochement between the thought of the Sanlun tradition with that of the Mahāyāna Mahāparinirvāṇa sūtra; to this end, he made use of the notion of aśūnyathāgatagarbha (tathāgatagarbha that is not empty) as found in the Śrīmālādevīsiṃhanāda sūtra.

[Michael Radich]
(fl. 632–646) An early (and perhaps the earliest) Seon 禪宗 monk of the Silla 新羅. Traveled to China to study Chan under the auspices of the Chinese master Daoxin 道信 (580–651). Beomnang is traditionally credited as being responsible for the initial transmission of Seon into Korea, and as a co-founder, along with Jiseon Doheon 智詵道憲 of the Huiyang san 曦陽山 Seon school of the Silla.
