Basic Meaning: Dongshanʼs three types of essence
Senses:
The three essential points of the Buddhist philosophy of Dongshan Liangjie 洞山良价 (807–869): (1) Call and response in union 敲唱倶行. Here, 敲 means a student requesting instruction, and 唱 refers to a teacher offering his or her preaching. This term indicates a close relationship between student and teacher. (2) Subtle path bound in gold 金鎖玄路. 金鎖, or golden chain, refers to the binding of the buddhas and the dharma. 玄路 refers to the subtle path of improvement. Being bound to the buddhas and the dharma is the way to improvement. (3) Not falling into mundanity or holiness 不墮凡聖. 凡聖 symbolizes the two views, those of ordinary people and those of the saints. This duality is the basis of the three worlds of transmigration 三界. By cutting off these dualities one can attain insight into the truth.
