Basic Meaning: Dongshanʼs sixty blows
Senses:
This phrase refers to a gong'an 公案 in which Dongshan Shouchu 洞山守初 (910–990) visits Yunmen Wenyan 雲門文偃 (864–949) for the first time. After hearing that Dongshan departed Hunan 湖南 on the twenty-fifth day of the eighth month, Yunmen said,
"I will beat you sixty times with a staff."
In this case, the characters 三頓棒 mean to strike with a staff sixty times. This implies that a student should not wantonly seek the Buddha Dharma through Buddhist teachers 善知識.
