Basic Meaning: Treatise on the Pure Land

  • A Tang-dynasty treatise on Pure Land in three fascicles by Jiacai 迦才 (d.u.); T 1963.47.83b1–104a12, composed in nine chapters, with the central theme of teaching the 'easy practice'  易行 of other power 他力. The main text is arranged in question-and-answer format, with the questioner being a worldly prince and the respondent being a Pure Land master. The chapters are as follows:
    1. 定土體性 in the Pure Land to the west 西方淨土 there are three lands of reward into which people are reborn based on their karma.
    2. 定往生人 the question is asked: what kinds of people are reborn into the Pure Land 淨土往生. The response is that worldlings 凡夫 are born directly 正生 and sages 聖人 are born concurrently 兼生. (?)
    3. 定往生因 what are the causes of rebirth in the Pure Lands 得往生. The general cause is the arousal of bodhicitta 菩提心; the specific causes are remembrance of a buddhaʼs name 念佛, making obeisance 禮拜, praising 讚嘆, giving rise to a vow 發願, meditation 觀察, conversion 囘向 and so forth.
    4. 出道理 explaining the rationale of how a worldling can be reborn into the Pure Land. The doctrine of rebirth based on the vow of Dharmâkara Bodhisattva 法藏菩薩 is explained, along with the compassionate skillful means directed at worldlings.
    5. 引聖教爲證 citing scriptural authority for rebirth by worldlings in the Pure Land. Passages are cited from twelve scriptures 十二經 and seven treatises 七論.
    6. 引現得往生人相貌 citing known precedents of rebirth in the Pure Land. The cases of six monks , four nuns , five upāsakas 優婆塞, five upāsikās 優婆夷 are related.
    7. 將西方兜率 comparison of the Western Land 西方極樂淨土 and Tuṣita Heaven 兜率天. Their relative merits are compared, with ten reasons provided for the excellence of the Pure Land. Also, seven reasons for the ease of sentient beings rebirth there are given.
    8. 明教興時節 clarification of the teaching and the timing. This is exactly the age of the Dharma when recitation of the Buddhaʼs name is the proper teaching.
    9. 教人欣厭勸進其心 encouraging people to get sick of the defiled world and long for the Pure Land 厭穢欣淨. Worldlings should maintain mindfulness of the Buddha for ten moments 乃至十念 in order to achieve this effect.
