Basic Meaning: pure assembly
Senses:
Equivalent to large assembly 大衆 in a Chan monastery 禪院. Not limited to monastics, as bodhisattvas can form this assembly. Also called 淸淨大海衆 and 淸淨衆. In the way that the four great rivers in India flow to the ocean, people abandon their original names to join the great ocean of the saṃgha. Abandoning their secular names, they no longer distinguish between caste and class, but seek liberation within the great community.
