滅因

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: cause of cessation

Senses:

  • The cause of cessation (Skt. vināśako hetuḥ, vināśa-kāraṇa, vināśaka) of a dharma (Pradhan 1967, 163). According to the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya 倶舍論, "destruction does not await a cause" 滅不待因 insofar as the destruction of a dharma is not contingent upon an external cause. Things perish spontaneously, as their very nature is momentary 刹那滅. 〔阿毘達磨倶舍論 T 1558.29.68a17〕 [Billy Brewster; source(s): Hirakawa, M-W]
