Basic Meaning: Chengguan
Senses:
(738–839) A Tang period monk of the Huayan school, who would later be honored by that school as its fourth patriarch. He was originally from Yue with the secular name Xiahou 夏侯, and the posthumous title of National Teacher Qingliang 淸涼. He is also called the Huayan Bodhisattva 華嚴菩薩 and the Huayan Commentator 華嚴疏主. He entered the saṃgha at age 11 with the Chan master Pei 霈 at Baolinsi 寶林寺 temple. From 758 he stayed at Qixiasi 棲霞寺 where he studied vinaya with the Vinaya master Li 醴. He followed this with studies of Madhyamaka 三論 that had been transmitted by Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什. He then applied himself to the Awakening of Faith 起信論, Nirvana Sutra 涅槃經. After obtaining a copy of Wonhyoʼs commentary to the Awakening of Faith 海東起信論疏, he began to study Huayan doctrine in earnest, but he also continued to study Mahāyāna teachings broadly. He wrote more than thirty works, some of the better known of which are his Commentary on the Huayan jing 大方廣佛華嚴經疏, the Suishu yanyi chao 隨疏演義鈔, the Thematic Essentials of the Huayan jing 華嚴經綱要, the Analysis of the Five Aggregates 五蘊觀, and the Sansheng yuanrong guan men 三聖圓融觀門. He is said to have had more than 100 students, among whom the most prominent were Zongmi 宗密, Sengrui 僧叡, Baoyin 寶印, and Jiguang 寂光.
