無住處涅槃

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: nirvana of no-abiding

Senses:

  • The nirvana of abiding in neither saṃsāra nor nirvana. Though not being stuck in the world, one enters the world out of great compassion in order to save sentient beings from suffering (Skt. apratisthita-nirvāṇa, apratiṣṭhitaṃnirvâṇam, apratiṣṭhita-nirvāṇa; Tib. mi gnas pa'i myang 'das pa). According to the Cheng weishi lun, non-abiding nirvana does not fall into either the extreme of annihilationism 斷見 or eternalism 常見. This is the Mahāyāna depiction of the nirvana of the buddhas, which does not abide in either time or space. This form of nirvana is presented in contrast to the quietistic nirvana of the arhat 羅漢, on the one hand, and the constant flux of the saṃsāra 生死 of the ordinary beings 異生 on the other. Non-abiding nirvana is the form of nirvana experienced by the buddhas, who have eliminated both afflictive 煩惱障 and cognitive hindrances 所知障. Also written 不住涅槃 and 無住涅槃. 〔成唯識論 T 1585.31.51c17〕 [Charles Muller, Billy Brewster; source(s): Ui, Nakamura, Hirakawa, YBh-Ind, JEBD, Iwanami]
