Basic Meaning: not concurrent
Senses:
(Skt. asamavadhāna; Tib. phrad pa med pa) (Pradhan 1967, 163; D 4090: vol. 140, folio/line 167a.3). This means that two factors 法 do not crowd each other in space and time. Each factor fully occupies a discrete spatio-temporal location. Like the mirror image reflected on the surface of a mirror and the mirror itself, two factors be concurrent in the same place at the same time. The upshot of Vasubandhuʼs 世親 example of the mirror image is that just as the mirror image is envisioned as always separate from the material making up the mirror, two continua 相續 (saṃtāna) made up of plural factors are always separate and distinct. La Vallée Poussin translates this verb as
"to not displace"
(1926, vol. 3, 5). However, strictly speaking, factors do not displace one another, as factors abide, change, and cease in the same place they arose. According to Abhidharma teachings, as factors arise, abide, change, and cease in the timespan of one moment 刹那, there is simply no time for factors to get in each otherʼs ways.
