Basic Meaning: Mujaku Dōchū
Senses:
(1653–1744). Japanese monk of the Rinzai school 臨濟宗, also known as Shōhyōdō 照冰堂 and Houdō 葆雨堂. Born in Tajima 但馬 (present-day Hyogo Prefecture), he became a monk at the age of seven at Nyoraiji 如來寺. After several decades of study and practice, he became the chief monk of Myōshinji Temple at the age of fifty-five. He was the author of some thirty-seven works, including the Zenrin zōkisen 禪林象器箋, Kattō gosen 葛藤語箋, Shōsōrin ryaku shingi 小叢林略淸規, and others. Usually referred to by 道忠.
