Basic Meaning: concentration without [directed] awareness but with only [sustained] contemplation
Senses:
(Skt. avitarka-vicāramātra-samādhi, Pāli avitakka-vicāramatta-samādhi). Also translated as 無尋惟伺定 and 無尋有伺定, the second level of the three samādhis 三三昧. 覺 is vitarka (
'rough apprehension'
, rendered by Xuanzang as 尋); 觀 vicāra (rendered by Xuanzang as 伺) is fine analysis. Cf. 有覺有觀定 and 無覺無觀定.
