Basic Meaning: Muzō Jōshō

Senses:

  • (1234–1306. ); posthumous title 法海禪師. Japanese monk of the Rinzai school 臨濟宗. Founder of the Hokkai Branch 法海派, one of the twenty-four transmissions of Zen 禪宗二十四流 that reached Japan. He went to China in 1252, where he studied under Chan under Shixi 石溪, and after receiving the seal of transmission studied under other teachers until his return to Japan in 1265. 〔延寶傳燈錄 (卷三), 本朝高僧傳 (卷二十一)〕 [Michel Mohr]
