Basic Meaning: Treatise on the Sutra of Limitless Life
Senses:
The Wuliangshoujing youbotishe; Sukhāvatīvyūhôpadeśa; One fascicle, T 1524; K 565, by Vasubandhu 世親; translated into Chinese during the northern Wei in 529 by Bodhiruci 菩提流支 at Yongningsi 永寧寺. This text explains rebirth in the Pure Land to be the path of the Bodhisattva. In the initial verse, the vow for rebirth in the Pure Land is explained, and praise is accorded to the adornment and virtues of Amitâbha and the bodhisattvas. The prose section explains the five kinds of mindfulness, including worship 禮拜, praise 讚歎, making the vow 作願, contemplation 觀察, and dedication of merit 廻向, as well as the five resultant teachings of closeness 近門, participation in teaching assemblies 大會衆門, at home 宅門, in oneʼs room 屋門, and traveling in the forest 園林遊戯地門. The former five are methods for attaining personal rebirth in Amitâbhaʼs Pure Land, and the latter five are methods for the cultivation of virtues. This text held a significant influence on the development of East Asian Pure Land Buddhism. See also T 1819. Also known by the alternate titles of 無量壽經優波提舍經論, 無量壽經優波提舍願生偈, 無量壽經論, 淨土往生論, 淨土論, 往生論, and 願生偈. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui]
