Basic Meaning: Gateless Barrier

Senses:

  • Wumen guan 1 fasc.; compiled by Wumen Huikai 無門慧開 (1183–1260). T 2005. A collection of forty-eight gongan along with commentaries, one of the prime examples of Song period Chan gongan literature. This text has been used as a source for Chan instruction throughout the history of the meditative traditions 禪宗 in East Asia, and has been transmitted in the meditative traditions to the West, where it has become one of the most popular texts.
