  • History [of the transmission] of the Lamp is a generic term for various texts containing biographies of Chan patriarchs and masters. According to John McRae, this 'genealogical model' reflects the historical self-understanding of the Chan school 禪宗 as a direct line of transmission from master to disciple, that goes back to Śākyamuni Buddha.
