Basic Meaning: Niutou Chan

Senses:

  • An influential stream of Chan during the Tang and Song periods, founded by Farong 法融, a disciple of Daoxin 道信, the fourth Chinese Chan patriarch. The name of the school comes from the name of the mountain where Farong did most of his teaching. This school declined after the Song Dynasty. Also written 牛頭宗 and 牛頭流.
