特芳禪傑

Basic Meaning: Tokuhō Zenketsu

Senses:

  • (1419–1506) A Japanese Rinzai school 臨濟宗 monk from Atsuta 熱田 in Ohari 尾張 (Aichi 愛知 prefecture). He moved to the capital as a youth and begun his studies under Zuigan 瑞嵓 (n.d.) of the Hōtō branch 法燈派 before leaving the Kyoto Five Mountains 五山 area to study under Giten Genshō 義天玄詔 (1393–1462), Unkoku Genshō 雲谷玄祥 (n.d.), and Tōin Gensaku 桃隱玄朔 (n.d.), before inheriting the dharma of Sekkō Sōshin 雪江宗深 (1408–1486). In 1478 he took up residence at Daitokuji 大德寺, before residing at Myōshinji 妙心寺 and Zuisenji 瑞泉寺, then founding Ryūtanji 龍潭寺 in Tango 丹後, and then becoming the abbot of Ryūanji 龍安寺. In his later years he built the Seigen'in 西源院 where he retired. He passed away on the tenth day of the ninth month at the age of eighty-eight and was given the posthumous title of Daijaku Jōshō zenji 大寂常照禪師 (also written 大寂定照禪師).
