Senses:
(3 fasc.) A record of the sayings of Xuansha Shibei 玄沙師備 (835–908) (who was given the title of Zongyi Dashi 宗一大師 by Emperor Zhaozong 昭宗 of the Tang Tangdai 唐代). The full title of this work is Fuzhou Xuansha Zongyi dashi yulu 福州玄沙宗一大師語錄 and is also known as Xuansha dashi yulu 玄沙大師語錄). It was compiled in 1626, over 700 years after the passing of Shibei, by layman Lin Hongyan 林弘衍, and is not to be confused with the similarly titled three-fascicle work Fuzhou Xuansha Zongyi dashi guanglu 福州玄沙宗一大師廣錄 that was published in 1080 (see that entry for more details). The first fascicle of the Xuansha Zongyi chanshi yulu contains an abbreviated biography of Shibei and a compilation of his sermons, and the second and third fascicles contain the
'raising of verses'
拈頌 by various masters about Shibeiʼs
'encounter dialogues'
機緣. The work also includes an introduction by Zhanran Yuancheng 湛然圓澄 (1561–1626).
