Basic Meaning: Xuanwan
Senses:
(562–636) An influential Shensi monk who lived through the persecution of Buddhism in the 北周 Northern Zhou dynasty into the Sui and Tang dynasties. Originally from Huayin 華陰 in Hongnong 弘農 (present-day Lingbao Lingbao 靈寶 in Henan Province),subsequently moving to Xinfeng 新豐 in Yongzhou 雍州. His family name was Yang 楊. He left home at age fifteen to be ordained by Tanyan 曇延, and later studied the Four Part Vinaya 四分律 with Hongzun 洪遵, becoming deeply versed in the vinaya literature, and was known to be strict in his observance of the precepts. He went on to further study the canon broadly, becoming known as a good lecturer. He later conferred the bodhisattva precepts on the crown prince and other rulers, who authorized the construction of the Puguangsi 普光寺. Among his writings are the Fojiao houdai guowang shangfa sanbao fa 佛教後代國王賞罰三寶法, Anyang cangsheng lun 安養蒼生論, Sande lun 三德論, and so forth.
