Xuance (?–854). Tang period 唐代 monk from Huiji 會稽 (in present-day Zhejiang 浙江), secular name Lu 魯. As a youth he traveled extensively with his father, who was a merchant. One time, arriving to Mt. Tiantai 天台山, he attended a lecture on the Suvarṇa-prabhāsa-sūtra 光明會, where he witnessed a huge crowd of people paying obeisance. After this he entered the saṃgha under the guidance of Zhiguang 智廣 at Chanlinsi 禪林寺. Later on, when visiting Mazu Daoyi 馬祖道一, he experienced a sudden awakening. He is posthumously titled Yuanji 圓寂.
