Basic Meaning: Tib. Paṇ chen bla ma
Senses:
Usually written in English as Panchen Lama. The second highest ecclesiastical position and an influential reincarnation lineage in Tibetan dGe lugs pa 黃教 order of Tibetan Buddhism. Panchen is a corrupted form of paṇḍita, which means
'great scholar. '
Also written 班禪額爾德尼 and 班禪活佛. These lamas are believed to be physical manifestations of Sangs rgyas 'Od dpag med 阿彌陀 (Skt. Amitâbha Buddha). The traditional seat of the Paṇ chen bla mas is bKra shis lhun po Monastery 扎什倫布寺, located in gZhis ka rtse. The following is a list of Paṇ chen bla ma incarnations, including the retroactive incarnations, numbers 1–3:

- bLo bzang dpal ldan ye shes (1738–1780)
- bLo bzang bstan pa'i nyi ma phyogs las rnam rgyal (1781–1854)
- bLo bzang bstan pa'i dbang phyug dpal ldan chos kyi grags pa (1855–1882)
- bLo bzang thub bstan chos kyi nyi ma dge legs rnam rgyal (1883–1937)
- Chos kyi rgyal mtshan 'phrin las lhun grub (1938–1989)
- dGe 'dun chos kyi nyi ma (1989–)
