Basic Meaning: revealed maṇḍala
Senses:
A general term used in Japanese esoteric Buddhism to denote physical images of maṇḍala. Specifically, it refers to the version of the Womb Mandala 胎藏曼荼羅 and Diamond World Mandala 金剛曼荼羅 imported to Japan by Kūkai 空海. The term was first used by Annen 安然 to distinguish between the different versions of the mandalas imported by Kūkai, Ennin 圓仁, Enchin 圓珍, and Shuei 宗叡 from Tang-dynasty China.
