Basic Meaning: realm

Senses:

  • A sphere, continuum; environment, world; defined area or space. The two dhātus are the conditioned and unconditioned, phenomenal and noumenal; the three 三界 are the realms of desire, of form, and of the formless; the four are earth, water, fire, and air; the six add space and intelligence.   • Element; [perceptual] bases; (Tib. khams). The eighteen cognitive elements of human existence, or of perception 十八界,—which include the six faculties 六根, the six objects 六塵 and the six cognitive functions 六識. [Charles Muller, Stephen Hodge]
  • Essence, substance 體, original nature 性; kernel; germ; materializing force.   • A Sanskrit verbal root. There are two broad ways of classifying dhātus – parasmaipada ( 'word for another' ), that is, the transitive or active verb and its terminations, and ātmanepada ( 'word to oneself' ) (Monier-Williams) that is, 'that form of the verb which implies an action belonging or reverting to self; the terminations of the middle voice.'
