Basic Meaning: mental disturbances within the [three] realms
Senses:
Mental disturbances that are the object of the practices of those who are still trapped in the three realms 三界 of cyclic existence. According to Tiantai teachings (as explained principally by Zhiyi 智顗 and Zhanran 湛然), the first set of mental disturbances in their division into three as 三惑. These are the mental disturbances arising from incorrect views 見惑 and perceptions 思惑 (見思惑). Insofar as these types of mental disturbance are the only ones that can be effectively dealt with by lower-level practitioners and followers of the lesser vehicle, they can be equated with the afflictive hindrances 煩惱障 explained in the Yogâcāra/Tathāgatagarbha texts. These are contrasted with the mental disturbances that affect those who have evolved beyond being trapped in cyclic existence—who have transcended the three realms, thus 界外惑. They are also understand a disturbing to the two teachings of phenomena within the realms 界內事教 and principle within the realms 界內理教.
