Basic Meaning: outside the realms
Senses:
That which is outside the three realms 三界. The three realms are the field of transmigration for the saṃsāra of unenlightened sentient beings 凡夫生死, whereas buddhas and bodhisattvas have recourse to rebirth in the pure lands 淨土 and other Buddha-realms (Skt. bahiḥ sīmām, niḥsīma). An area outside of that designated by monastic regulations. Outside of the monastery — lay practitioners.
