Basic Meaning: Baekpa Seonseon
Senses:
(1767–1852) Renowned both as a scholar and meditation master. He wrote the Seon Manual Seonmun sugyeong 禪門水鏡, which became one of this periodʼs most important guidebooks on the theory of Seon meditation. In this book, loosely basing his theory on the teachings of Chinese Chan master Linji Yixuan 臨濟義玄, he attempted, somewhat controversially, to divide Seon into three different categories for attaining enlightenment. These were: josa seon 祖師禪 (patriarchal Seon): mind-to-mind transmission; yeorae seon 如來禪 (Tathāgata Seon): based on understanding the scriptural teachings; and uiri seon 義理禪 (rational Seon): intellectual understanding in which the discriminating mind predominates. According to Baekpa, while patriarchal and tathāgata Seon both refer to transcendental states, patriarchal Seon was considered superior. [Ockbae Chun]
