Korean temple, situated at the base of Mt. Baeg-am 白巖山 in Jangseong gun 長城郡, Jeolla namdo 全羅南道. It was called Baeg-amsa 白巖寺 (Lit. White Rock Temple) when it was founded in 632 by Yeohwan 如幻 in the time of the Baekje 百濟 Kingdom. Later, during the Goryeo 高麗 period, a monk named Jungyeon 中延 changed the name to Jeongtosa 淨土寺 after remodeling the temple. The name was changed again to Baeg-yangsa in 1574 during the reign of King Seonjo of the Joseon 朝鮮 Kingdom. The story is told in this way: One of the templeʼs monks had been delivering a sermon for a few days. At the time of the sermon, a white mountain goat came down from Mt. Baeg-am to listen. On the last day of the sermon, the white mountain goat appeared in the monkʼs dream and thanked him for its returning to heaven owing to his sermon. The next day the white mountain goat was found dead in the mountain. Afterwards, the name of the temple was changed to Baeg-yangsa literally meaning
'White Goat Temple.'
Since 1917, Man-am Jongheon (曼庵 宗憲 1876–1957) started to rebuild the temple, while opening up a monkʼs college. Because of his excellent teachings, a lot of monks flocked together at this temple and he was invited to Haeinsa 海印寺 as a sutra master. The eminent Korean Seon 禪宗 master, Seo-ong 西翁 (1912–2003) was one of his disciples. Baeg-yangsa is also called as the Gobul Chongnim 古佛叢林.
