Basic Meaning: Pāṇḍaravāsinī Bodhisattva
Senses:
A figure in the Court of the Lotus Division 蓮華部院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅. Also rendered 半拏囉嚩悉寧, 白處尊, 白處觀音, and 白衣觀音. White yellow in color 白黃色, he sits on a red lotus. In the left hand he holds a blossomed lotus, with the right hand making the wish-granting mudrā 與願印. Seed syllable: pa. Mudrā: *Pāṇḍaravāsinī-mudrā 白處尊印. Mantra: namaḥ samantabuddhānāṃ tathāgataviṣayasaṃbhave padmamālini svāhā. Darijing shu 大日經疏 (T 1796; fasc. 5) states the deity is always seated amongst white lotuses, hence the name. Also said to be the mother of the Lotus Division 蓮花部母. It is from this most white and pure place that pervasive vision 普眼 emerges. Pāṇḍaravāsinī is to be placed to the right of Tārā Bodhisattva 多羅菩薩, though in extant maṇḍalas this is not always so. Pāṇḍaravāsinīʼs dhāraṇī 白衣觀音陀羅尼 is employed in astral magic. See Xiuyao yigui 宿曜儀軌 (T 1304). References:
