Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Pāṇḍaravāsinī Bodhisattva

Senses:

  • A figure in the Court of the Lotus Division 蓮華部院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅. White yellow in color 白黃色, he sits on a red lotus. In the left hand he holds a blossomed lotus, with the right hand making the wish-granting mudrā 與願印. Seed syllable: pa. Mantra: namaḥ samantabuddhānāṃ tathāgataviṣayasaṃbhave padmamālini svāhā. (T 1796; fasc. 5) states the deity is always seated amongst white lotuses, hence the name. Also said to be the mother of the Lotus Division It is from this most white and pure place that pervasive vision 普眼 emerges. Pāṇḍaravāsinī is to be placed to the right of Tārā Bodhisattva 多羅菩薩, though in extant maṇḍalas this is not always so. Pāṇḍaravāsinīʼs dhāraṇī 白衣觀音陀羅尼 is employed in astral magic. See Xiuyao yigui 宿曜儀軌 (T 1304).
