眞禪融心義

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: The Harmonization of Esoteric and Zen Buddhism

Senses:

  • Shinzen yūshin gi 眞禪融心義, 2 fascicles. Compiled by disciples of Myōan Yōsai (also Eisai) 明菴榮西 in Kōchō 3 (1263). The text provides a fourfold classification of the doctrines of Shingon 眞言 esoteric Buddhism and Zen Buddhism, and argues for their compatibility. The four doctrines of Esoteric Buddhism discussed in Shinzen yūshin gi are: (1) shikkishin funi 色心不二 the non-duality of form and mind; (2) taikon funi 胎金不二 the non-duality of the garbhadhātu 胎藏界 and the vajradhātu 金剛界; (3) jiri funi 事理不二 the non-duality of relative phenomena and the absolute truth; and (4) nifukatoku 二不可 the two unobtainables. The four doctrines of Zen Buddhism are: (1) kyōnai kyōge 教內教外 doctrinal and non-doctrinal teachings; (2) butsuji jissai 佛事實際 Buddhist rituals and events and absolute reality; (3) funi 不二 non-duality; and (4) the two unobtainables nifukatoku 二不可得. Recent scholars have questioned how closely Shinzen yūshin gi represents the thought of Yōsai. For example, Takayanagi (2018) notes that the second fascicle contains teachings of the Daruma 達磨 school as well as hongaku 本學 thought connected to Annen 安然 and Enni 圓爾, while the verses for the five offerings 五供養 in the first fascicle are reinterpretations of Annenʼs verses for the five offerings.
