Basic Meaning: Shinshō
Senses:
A Shingon 眞言宗 monk of the early Heian Period. Shinshōʼs (797–873) antecedents are not very clear, but he first lived as a monk at Daianji. He took the precepts at Tōdaiji, and then began to study under Kūkai. In 840, he became assistant steward at the Tōji. In 843, he received the Dharma transmission initiation (denpō kanjō) from Jichie, and became the third Japanese Shingon Grand Master (after Kūkai and Jichie). In 848, he was promoted to the rank of risshi 律師 and also began to serve as vice-head (ni chōja) at the Tōji. In 855 he purchased an estate from the Fujiwara, enshrined icons sent up from Kanshinji, and founded Zenrinji 禪林寺, which entered the state temple system as a Jōgakuji in 963. In 969, Shinshō was promoted to the rank of shōsōzu 少僧都. His works include the Zenrinji iseiki 禪林寺遺制記. (nnj404) [Heather Blair]
