瞎道本光

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Katsudō Honkō

Senses:

  • (1710–1773) A monk of the Japanese Sōtō school 曹洞宗 born in Musashi 武藏 (Saitama 埼玉 prefecture). Cognomens include Gujaku 求寂. (Not to be confused with 本光國師; see 以心崇傳). Honkō joined the monkhood at a young age under Shigetsu E'in 指月慧印 (1689–1764) at Anseiji 安盛寺 in Saitama, and after many years of practice inherited his dharma. He later became the abbot of Anseiji and then of Yōkōji 養光寺 in Kawasaki 川崎. Basing himself at the monastery 栴檀林 of Kichijōji 吉祥寺 in Edo 江戶, he lectured on the Shōbōgenzō and other Sōtō works. Honkō was known to rival his teacher E'in in scholarship, and at age twenty-three while staying at Yōtakuji 永澤寺 in Tamba 丹波 (Hyōgo 兵庫 prefecture) the abbot there introduced him to Dōgenʼs Shōbōgenzō bendōwa 正法眼藏辨道話, which started Honkōʼs thirty-nine year fascination with studying the Shōbōgenzō. As it was the trend at the time to favor Buddhist works in Chinese over those in Japanese kana, Honkō rewrote the Shōbōgenzō with annotations every few lines in the kanbun style in ninety-five fascicles under the title Shōbōgenzō kyakutai ichijisan 正法眼蔵却退一字参 (aka. Shōbōgenzō sanchū 正法眼蔵參註; or, simply, Sanchū 參註). His many other works include Yōsotsu kōroku tencha tō 永卒廣錄點茶湯 (10 fasc.), Giun ōshō goroku bakusaku e 義雲和尙語錄泊錯會, Kyōju kaimonshi sanshō 教授戒文試參請, Sōsan geshaku dōsan goi kenketsu shō 曹山解釋洞山五位顯訣鈔, Sanshuda 三種墮, Sandōkai 參同契, Hōkyō sanmaiga gōshū 寶鏡三昧瓦合集, Shuryō shinki gujaku san 衆寮箴規求寂參, Shōbōgenzō honmoku ju kongō jissō san 正法眼藏品目頌金剛荎草參, Zenen kikyō mon gujaku san 禪苑龜鏡文求寂參, Taidai kohō gujaku san 對大己法求寂參, Daichi zenshi geju sanchū 大智禪師偈頌參註, Hekiganshū kokushitsu tsū 碧巖集黑漆桶, and Mōin mōhen 盲引盲篇. 〔近古禪林叢談〕 , 〔近世禪林言行錄〕 .
